The Lab

We are working in the most exciting areas of medicinal chemistry with special focus to the structure-based drug design and discovery, targeting human kinases. In our lab, the three-dimensional structure of potential drug targets (human kinases) and their complexes with inhibitors are determined by X-ray crystallography. The structural features of these kinases are exploited to design high-affinity selective inhibitors that bare minimum side effects, using a combination of cutting-edge experimental, computational, molecular, and cellular biology methods. Our research also involved the experimental investigations of protein folding pathways, global and local stabilities of proteins, and their conformation, which are required for the development of novel molecules that may be further employed to reduce the protein aggregates and implicated to address neurodegenerative disease.

The PI

Dr. Md. Imtaiyaz Hassan is a decorated scientist having unique distinction of being a Fellow of Royal Society of Biology, U.K. (FRSB) as well as Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry, U.K. (FRSC), has vast experience in the area of structure-based drug design and discovery. After completing B.Sc. Chemistry in 2001, and M.Sc. Biotechnology in 2003 (with gold medal) from Aligarh Muslim University, Dr Hassan move to All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi for his Doctoral studies where he graduated in 2007 with the gold medal. He has been working as a Young Scientist at Jamia Millia Islamia during 2007-2009 and selected as Fellow of Indo-US Science and Technology Forum at Saint Louis University, Saint Louis, USA in 2011. From 2009, Dr. Hassan is working as an assistant professor at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic Sciences, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He has been elected as Vice-President of the Indian Biophysical Society and also serving as General Secretary of protein society and Joint Secretary of bioinformatics and drug design society.

What we do..

Protein kinases are enzyme which phosphorylates many proteins and signaling molecules and thereby regulate almost all biological processes of human life. Our major work is on structure-based drug design and discovery with a focus on the identification of potent and selective kinase inhibitors. The structural features of human kinases are exploited to design of high-affinity selective inhibitors with minimum side effects, using a combination of experimental, computational, molecular, and cellular biology techniques. The selected inhibitors are further checked for its cytotoxicity and other in vivo studies to validate its potential as a therapeutic molecule. We conduct multidisciplinary, mechanism-based, translational research of the highest possible impact in the line of prevention and control of kinase-mediated cancer.
